English Department

Objectives

The English Language and Literature (EL/Lit) Department aims to develop students into Empathetic Communicators, Discerning Readers and Creative Inquirers. Through the study of language and literature, students build a strong foundation in communication while learning to think critically and respond thoughtfully to the world around them.

The department also seeks to nurture students who are aware of global issues and sensitive to diverse perspectives. In doing so, students grow into concerned global citizens and active, adaptive contributors, while developing a deeper interest and confidence in both English Language and Literature.

Approach

Our teaching approach emphasises:

• Explicit instruction of language skills and knowledge to establish strong foundations in the English language.

• Exposure to a rich language environment that encourages meaningful reading, writing, speaking and listening.

• The exploration of contemporary issues affecting Singapore and the wider world, allowing students to apply language skills in authentic and relevant contexts.

• A student-centric curriculum that supports diverse abilities, interests and learning styles.

Through this approach, students are encouraged to read critically, express themselves clearly and engage thoughtfully with different viewpoints.

• Literature lessons that explore texts from a wide range of periods and cultures.
